All Winter Long

Let’s just be honest: running in the cold sucks. But the alternative is the treadmill, and I don’t know about you, but I generally get a little insane after more than three or four miles of running in place. Plus, for me, so much of the appeal of running is the camaraderie with other runners, so getting outdoors with my friends is a lot nicer than communing with the TV at the gym.

So, I run outside, every Thursday, (almost) without fail, every week of the year. Here are a few suggestions for managing the cold this winter so that you, too, can get out there:

1.      Get the gear. There’s no way around it; you’re going to have to buy some special clothes for this. Under Armour makes cold gear that my husband swears by; I have a Brooks jacket and some Nike compression tops that I’m fond of. Make sure to buy things that are made for running in the cold.

2.      Layer. The more the merrier, right? I have most definitely worn more than one pair of pants on occasion. It’s okay if you look like a fool. The people looking at you don’t think you’re ridiculous; they think you’re super hardcore for running in single-digit temps. Just make sure that the layer closest to your body is moisture-wicking. You don’t want a sweaty cotton t-shirt stuck to your body when you’re walking home. That wet will freeze, and so will you.

3.      It’s better to wear too much than too little. If you think you might need a hat and gloves, wear them! If you get hot, you can always take them off. It’s a good idea to wear a fanny pack (or RaceReady pants, which I am obsessed with – you could carry the entire contents of your purse in those babies) so that you can stash things you find you don’t need.

4.      Have the right attitude. As those wise marketers at Nike once said: Just do it. The truth is, once you’re moving, you’re generally fine. It’s only a big deal if you make it out to be!

    oooh I love those pants too! Does the stuff in the pockets pump against you as you run?

    I’d also add running with a group/club or friends — meeting up with people seems to make it more bearable!
